I had always heard about Texas Food Banks, especially since my best friend would frequently volunteer at the one in Dallas (North Texas Food Bank). However, actually volunteering there was an excellent experience. I got to see how they worked with volunteers to ensure efficiency and timeliness and how they motivated people to come back. I definitely see myself volunteering here again.
As I continued volunteering at Community First, I began to create bonds with the residents. I became a familiar face to them, and it started to feel as though I was a part of this community. It was an overall great experience.
Volunteering here, I got a chance to connect with people and learn about issues that I wouldn't have gotten the chance to otherwise. The people within this community were open to telling me their stories, and I was available to listen. It was an overall unforgettable experience.
As I volunteered, I got the opportunity to learn about the issues the community as a whole would have to deal with, such as lobbying for bus routes, and how they are currently going about addressing the roadblocks that arise for them daily. It was a great learning opportunity, especially because I want to go into the nonprofit sector as a career. Learning about these ongoing issues and the different routes that can be taken to address them was a valuable skill I was able to get insight about and made this experience more impactful than it already was.
Volunteering at this community has been an amazing experience and has helped me gain insight on how Austin is addressing people experiencing homelessness, food insecurity, and what current nonprofits are doing and still need to do in order to tackle these complex problems. This experience has been eye-opening and perspective-shifting,
Community First is a great place to volunteer and learn about a plethora of issues connected to people experiencing homelessness, such as food insecurity, mental health, and resource-finding. Because it is a unique solution to the homeless epidemic and cities nationwide are trying to mirror its strategy, it is the perfect place to learn about solutions to all the aforementioned topics. It is truly an eye-opening experience.
Nice Community! While volunteering, I was able to tour the facility and meet a bunch of the residents. I was able to have conversations with them and hear their individual stories about how they ended up at the village.
