I had a great time cleaning up Pease Park. I made some new friends along the way and we collaboratively picked up trash along the sidewalks and roads. It really opened my eyes as to how much trash people throw away outside of the trash cans. At one point I found an entire backpack with books and other school supplies still inside in a creek. It was a little hot and since we were near the main roads there wasn't much shade from the sun, but it was still a lot of fun. I definitely feel more satisfied now knowing my fellow Austin residents can enjoy the park a little more because of our efforts that day.
I actually adopted one of my guinea pigs here and come regularly on Saturdays to buy pellets, food, bedding, and treats for them. Getting a hands on look at how they care for the many rescued guinea pigs and rabbits made me feel better about where my own cavy came from. Helping out was immensely satisfying for me because I felt like I was showing these abandoned guinea pigs that there are people who care about them. I helped with cleaning bedding, spot cleaning cages, changing water. All of this taught me how to better care for my own guinea pigs and keep them as happy and healthy as possible. Overall it was a very fun experience because I got to interact with the cute piggies a lot. I feel like some of the work was a little smelly but I was used to it having 2 of my own pigs.
