Event Description | PROGRAM SUMMARY The City of Fayetteville and BikeNWA joined forces to implement Slow Streets NWA to support safe activities outdoors in response to added challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic. The program implements soft closures on select city streets, restricting them to local vehicle traffic. This includes residents, business traffic, emergency vehicles, and service/delivery vehicles. The goal is to make neighborhood streets safer to walk, bike, and travel without a vehicle, creating wider spaces than our current sidewalks and trails allow for safe physical distancing. On these streets, residents can make trips to local businesses and explore the community using the roadway while reducing foot traffic at parks and on outdoor trails, like the Razorback Greenway, which have experienced extremely high usage since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The route purposefully engages business districts to drive support for local businesses.
ROLE DESCRIPTION Each city has a Slow Streets NWA program plan to meet the needs of that route and community. Slow Streets NWA volunteers are needed for the setup and breakdown of the street closure barricades, signage, and all program materials as well as monitor the route via active transportation. Volunteers will be provided a Volunteer Information Packet with details about their assigned city, route, closure setup/breakdown process, and general expectations. |
