I volunteered for the ENCORE Program hosted at Webb Early College Prep Academy. I am part of the UT Academic Counselors Association and we provided volunteer hours to serve food to the families who who were attended the conference that day.
This is my third time doing the event and is one of my favorite volunteer opportunities. Because I work at a university, the mission of ENCORE and the mission of my organization are similar and I love knowing that we are actively providing services in middle school that allow students to know that higher education can be obtained.

I volunteered with an organization called Feed My People. It's a Christian organization that serves food to homeless people at 5 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I got to perform various tasks including food preparation and serving, cleaning, and greeting. It was a good way to start the day and a rewarding experience. It was three hours and I went three times.

I did not know what to expect considering that I have never tutored before in my life. However, Ms. Galindo welcomed me with open arms, and I could not be more thankful. I can truly say I enjoyed the whole experience. Volunteering at Webb Middle School allowed me to see many things. I walked into Ms. Galindo's 7th grade class, and I was very impressed by Ms. Galindo's influence on the kids. The kids welcomed us and began asking me for assistance on a writing exercise they were working on. After talking and interacting with the kids, it brought me back to when I was a 7th grader. I just felt so comfortable in that environment that I wanted to help kids with what I struggled with. Although teaching is not my major, I feel it is something I can definitely look into. I simply want to recommend going out and helping the community. Often times, I feel that students are not told that they can go to college; therefore, they do not try in school. I will definitely go back to give my time and help Ms. Galindo.
