Susan G. Komen Austin

Alexandra Montanez

Christmas time is full of joy. Wrapping presents for the shoppers at Barton Creek Mall was very rewarding. Shoppers got help the foundation by donating money to get their gifts endearingly wrapped for their loved ones. This was a wonderful experience because as a wrapper we had the opportunity to spread Christmas cheer with those inside the mall while contributing our time to an even bigger cause.

It was a wonderful experience helping out at the Susan G. Komen "Race for a Cure". The people there were kind and inspirational. I held signs and directed runners to where they needed to be.

Today I volunteered with the Susan G. Komen Foundation in Austin at their annual Race for the Cure. I was able to meet and interact with some breast cancer survivors while working at the registration tent, and later on I was able to encourage runners as they completed the race route, and pass out refreshments to runners. As someone with multiple family members afflicted by breast cancer (and cancer and general) it was great to give back to an organization that is actively looking for a cure.

I helped FLO volunteer at Susan G. Komen's Race for the Cure Austin! We put up some signs as well as cheered on the survivors when they crossed the finish line! The most rewarding part was seeing how happy they were knowing they beat cancer.

Overall, I had a great experience. My job was to hand out t-shirts to those who had registered. Although I didn't talk to every other worker and mostly kept to my own station, those I did talk to were very friendly and made me feel welcome. The process was smooth and well-operated, and I never felt as though I was without a task to perform. Additionally, I never felt that I was lost or needed assistance with my duties.

I had a lot of fun cheering on the runners and walkers racing for breast cancer awareness. My group was optimistic and we came up really fun chants for the runners to enjoy. I had an overall fun experience for the event.

Saturday afternoon, I helped set up the stage and organize some boxes for the race held on Sunday, November 16th. It opened my eyes to how much work and effort goes on when planning such a big event, and really made me appreciate all the work and dedication people put into these events.

I helped pass out the information packets and bibs to the people who signed up to do the race. I also helped organize all the packets. It was a nice experience.
