I enjoyed working with other students from UT and citizens of Austin to create a cleaner and more manageable trail for park goers. We all worked in teams to clear rocks from pathways and carry them to where rocks were needed or better situated.
Along with fellow ASCE and AEI members, we mulched newly planted trees around the softball fields at Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park. Had an enjoyable experience, and made some new friends and connections with wise junior and senior level engineering students. As we mulched I was able to ask them what their first years as a engineering student was like and received some valuable advice, along side the fact of improving growth rate of the newly planted trees. Definitely an event that a student can make as an annual volunteer experience.
I really loved helping everyone fix the trail it was hard work, but it was fun! it was great having everyone thank us for making it easier for them to walk by or ride in their bikes. It was also really nice seeing everyone work together for a good cause, and I especially loved the line we formed and the system we created to shovel the gravel and pass the buckets it really worked out very well. I want to thank the Austin Parks Foundation for letting us be a part of their team and let us help them and I want to thank everyone else who helped make the park better.
I loved being able to help preserve nature. I felt like I made a difference, and assisted the community as well as the environment.
This experience at Walnut Creek Park was great! I had no idea how much work and effort goes into creating and or re-making biking trails. I am very glad I took this opportunity.
