I was able to work with volunteers to help guide and manage panel speakers as well as helping with technical audio and video.
Worked at the registration desk, checking in various speakers, sponsors, Texas Tribune members, and attendees of the festival. The system of volunteer check-in was efficient and we knew where and who to report to if there was an issue we couldn't handle. Even with some technical difficulties involving the printers were resolved quickly because of the organization involved in making sure everything went smoothly.
Volunteering at the festival offered valuable networking opportunities to speak with senators, environmentalists, and journalists who were passionate about the issues they were raising. However, it was also surprising to be able to talk to the Texas Tribune staff and learn about their experiences in other festivals such as SxSW and ECO. Everyone who I worked with was very courteous and professional. This kind of volunteering exposes you to a sort of behind-the-scenes look at how politics work with speakers of such different backgrounds coming together. Definitely will be volunteering again next year!
