Sanchez Elementary is a school in East Austin; this school has a special place in my heart and it is where my child attends Kindergarten so you will hear me talk about it often. The programming here is great and The College of Education has a special agreement with this school to help it provide the best Two-way Dual Language program in Austin. This school is always in dire need of assistance; 98.4% of the kids who attend Sanchez Elementary are living in poverty and, even though they are just across the highway, many of the kids have never visited the UT Campus. To many, attending UT is a dream that they do not believe they would ever be able to achieve. That being said, them seeing you all in your longhorn gear feels incredible. A lot of times, they just are amazed to know that a "longhorn" is really there to hang out with them. It is an incredible feeling to see that happen.
Sanchez Elementary will be hosting it's Dia De Los Muertos Festival on November 2. After the event, some Sanchez families will be headed to the Mexican American Culture Center (walking distance from the Elementary) to see the MACC's famous Dia De Los Muertos event with live music, food (for purchase) and community altars. While this opportunity is a drive to get to; it is very much worth your time. I hope that you will join me and my family in this amazing opportunity.
