Met Council is partnering with Food Bank for New York City to improve access to free tax-preparation services for the underserved communities, particularly in areas of Jewish poverty. Met Council aims to pilot these services to approximately four different Jewish Community Councils with the help of skilled volunteers like you.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to people who generally make $54,000 or less, persons with disabilities, the elderly and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.

Through in-person assistance with trained volunteers, Met Council can assist families with preparing and submitting their tax returns for 2015, helping needy families access the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). On average, the EITC can provide families with an additional $256 per month that can be used to pay for necessities, repair apartments or obtain additional education/ training. In 2013, the EITC lifted approximately 6.2 million people out of poverty, representing about 3.2 million children (Center on Budget and Policy Priorities).
