Ombudsmen are advocates for residents of long-term care facilities (Nursing Homes, Board and Care Homes, Specialty Care and Assisted Living Facilities).  They work with all parties to protect the health, safety, welfare and rights of Alabama's long-term care residents.

Volunteers work to be an advocate and friendly face at one facility. This volunteer would conduct routine friendly visits often at this one facility and send in reports to the Certified Ombudsman at the Jefferson County Area Agency on Aging at United Way of Central Alabama. This volunteer might only visit certain sections of the facility each time they come, but the goal is for them to come more often than a certified Ombudsman. This volunteer will work to establish a rapport with all of the residents in that facility slowly over time.

Availability Requirements

The volunteer Ombudsman program requires at least one-year commitment from all our volunteers. Volunteers should commit to a minimum of 20 hours a month in volunteering.
